        Title: Craven County Cadastral Dataset
    Description:
      Abstract: In 1989 Craven County contracted to have its cadastral land records created
                in digital form.  The contractors obtained orthophotography of the county
                and transferred the cadastral information onto hard copy orthos from deeds,
                surveys and other documents.  The information on the hard copy orthos was
                then manually digitized and converted into Arc\Info coverages.  The coverages
                were copied onto the County's GIS system and maintained thereafter by the
                Land Records Specialist of Craven County (Hattie Gladson, Tina Daughety and
                Mendie Campbell).  The cadastral land records are maintained on a daily basis
                by using recorded deeds, surveys and digital copies available.  The appraisal
                database is linked and incorporated with the cadastral land records via the
                use of a unique Parcel Id.                
      Purpose: The original project was started in 1987 due to problems encountered by the
               tax administration office having poor land records information in map form.
               The Craven County Commissioners at that time decided to provided the funds
               establish a GIS dedicated to collecting and maintaining the neccessary
               information to support the appraisal of properties in Craven County fairly and
               equitable.
